Murat Kurum, the lead candidate for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) of the People’s Alliance, stated, „What is not on the agenda of Istanbul will not be on our agenda.“ Despite this statement, it was noteworthy that the Canal Istanbul project was included in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s 2024-2028 strategic plan.

Environmental Impact Assessment Decision

The Canal Istanbul project, which is included in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s 2024-2028 strategic plan, was evaluated with the aim of creating a waterway to reduce the density of our country’s maritime transport and ensure that maritime traffic becomes safer, faster, and more economical. According to the plan, the project is currently 20% complete, with the goal of completing 30% of the canal by 2027 and 45% by 2028. The section also mentions potential obstacles the project may face, such as high investment costs, inadequacy of entrepreneurship in the private sector, revocation of the positive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) decision, and possible delays due to cancellation lawsuits filed against the environmental system plan and zoning plans, as well as the risk that objections in the tender process may prevent the investment from being realized.

Billions of Additional Costs

According to reports from the Republic, the production budget of the broadcaster, whose costs amounted to 75 billion TL in the cost breakdown of the Ministry’s 2019-2023 strategic plan, is now listed at 356 billion 176 million 423 thousand 533 TL in the new plan. The project’s strategies emphasize, „Greatest attention will be paid to the protection of nature and the environment. The project process will be carried out in close collaboration with relevant institutions/organizations. The historical and cultural structure of the Bosphorus will be preserved.“ The plan also provides information on the project, stating, „Maritime traffic in the Bosphorus is increasing. Historical structures and the vibrant life around the Bosphorus are at risk due to traffic.“ These findings were taken into account.
