The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced the day before that foreign VARs will be used for critical matches in the Trendyol Super League until the end of the season. Spanish referee Mario Melero Lopez was appointed for the match between MKE Ankaragücü and Gaziantep FK, becoming the first foreign VAR referee in the history of the Super League. Former referees criticized the TFF’s decision regarding the appointment of a foreign VAR referee.
