In Ukraine, thousands of children aged 6 to 16 have started receiving education in converted underground metro stations, protected from attacks.
Teacher Olenna Volodomir shared his experiences underground, explaining that it’s better than having threatened children learn online.
Being the second largest city in Ukraine, in Kharkiv, just 24 kilometers from the Russian border, five underground schools have been established.
Teacher Olenna Volodomir told The Sun: “ It feels strange to have classrooms underground, but it’s the only way to teach in person. For children, this is much more sufficient. Children feel safe here.“
During the heaviest bombing, 160,000 people started living in the city’s metro stations. Olenna has been teaching her students online for two years, but this is a significant part of the pandemic, as frequent air raid sirens force students to take cover. He mentioned that it’s much more challenging than remote learning. Large ventilation ducts for fresh air have been installed along the classroom ceilings instead of windows.
Deputy Head of the Education Department of Kharkiv Valerii Shepel stated that 2,000 students are enrolled in five „metro schools,“ with thousands more wanting to join.
Shepel said, „We plan to open more because the demand is so high. We aim to have one for each district.“.
Mayor of Kharkiv Ihor Terechow mentioned that half of the city’s 200 schools have already been destroyed by the war.
