Authorities announced that a woman died and five people were injured when a bridge collapsed onto railway tracks in western Russia.
It was reported that all train traffic was suspended after the incident in the city of Vyazma in the Smolensk region. Approximately 8,000 households were left without gas due to damage to the pipelines.
While the cause of the collapse of the Paninsky overpass was being investigated, a news channel claimed that the collapse was due to the bridge’s old age.
According to the Telegram channel 112, residents had repeatedly asked the authorities to repair the overpass.
It is alleged that many vehicles were on the bridge when it collapsed.
Regional Governor Vassily Anokhin announced that six out of the seven pillars of the bridge collapsed. While three of the injured were taken to the capital Moscow, a 14-year-old girl was treated at a local hospital.
Anokhin shared the following on his social media account: „I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased lady.“said.
The governor added that more than 160 rescuers were on site throughout the night to restore train traffic as quickly as possible.
