İş Sanat Kibele Art Gallery is commemorating one of Turkey’s leading cartoonists in 2022, known for his unique sense of humor, lines, and characters, whom we lost in 2022, with the exhibition „Written and Drawn by LATIF DEMİRCİ,“ on display until June 30, 2024, marking the fifty-year artistic journey of A.Ş.

Curated by the artist’s daughter, Yasemin Demirci, his close friend, journalist İhsan Yılmaz, took on the booth’s design, led by Emre Senan.

Yasemin Demirci says, „My father brought out simple humor in every story, paying attention to the fine details. I only realized the extent of his archive when I started collecting his personal items and drawings. We consider it very valuable to showcase this archive containing his previously unpublished drawings.“

İhsan Yılmaz also mentions, „With Latif’s cartoons, a very colorful and humorous story of the last 30 to 40 years in Turkey can be written.“ They aim to both honor Demirci’s work and introduce him to new generations through this exhibition.

From 1974 to his last cartoon in 2002 …

The retrospective booth, bringing together Demirci’s works, adventures of the animated characters he created, books he published, and various artworks in a chronological and thematic system with art lovers, covers the artist’s journey from his Gırgır era starting in 1974, to his last cartoon released in 2022.

The exhibition is the result of a comprehensive archival study of Demirci’s works, preserving the brand-new and published versions of all cartoons he drew since Gırgır, the albums compiled into books, and his unseen watercolor works and sketchbooks.

The exhibition features examples such as Monster Sheep Orhan, Muhlis Bey, Arab Kadri, My Dear Mithat, and Mirsat, Mr. Press, alongside cartoons with unforgettable heroes, those he drew for weekly magazines like Nokta and Yeni Gündem and the daily cartoons on the front page that ran for many years in Hürriyet.

After Cartoonist Latif Demirci: „He hit what he aimed at, he didn’t hurt who he hit“

Friends and colleagues of the artist we lost in 2022; Hasan Cemal, Sebati Karakurt, Ertuğrul Özkök, Prof. Hüsamettin Koçan, Özlem Gurses, Turhan Günay, M. Kutlukhan Perker, Musa Ağaçık, Sedat Ergin, Doğan Hızlan, Mevhibe Tura, Meral Onat, Tuncay Akgün, spoke with T24 about Latif Demirci, who left his mark on the art of cartooning.

At Demirci’s funeral, journalist Ertuğrul Özkök said about the artist:

„Latif had a very valuable quality: He never used his lines as bullets or arrows. Many columnists in Turkey take pride in using their pens as bullets, as weapons of war…

Latif criticized all of us. Not only the government; Both the opposition and us… We were among the people he criticized the most.

However, he was a person who always hit when throwing, but never hurt when shooting.“
