At Boğaziçi University, where the protests by academics for the election of the rector have been ongoing since 2021, Prof., one of the former rectors of the school who was elected to the top position, was not allowed on campus today. DR. Üstün Ergüder, Rector “Naci İnci” stated that he called him and apologized. Ergüder explained he understands the situation.
Ergüder, who served as rector between 1992 and 2000 and spent 50 years at Boğaziçi University, was unable to enter the campus today. Prof. DR. Mine Eder explained the situation as follows: „I just learned that our teacher Üstün Ergüder, who spent 50 years at Boğaziçi University, including his rectorship between 1992 and 2000, was not allowed on campus. Shame on those who do this.“ I do not know, he is the first elected rector of Boğaziçi and the green main square of the campus where everyone takes photos.“ „His name is Üstün-Ergüder-Square.“
Speaking to T24 about the incident he experienced, Prof. Ergüder said, Prof. He said he sent a message to Naci İnci after he was not allowed to enter the campus, and İnci called him and expressed her condolences. „It was a good thing for me that he called,“ Ergüder said.
Prof. Ergüder said: „They said my emblem was outdated, but they didn’t let me in. I said I was the former rector, but I didn’t have a card, etc., I only had the emblem on my car. They always knew.“ But I think the person at the door was a new friend. Then I sent a message to the rector on WhatsApp and he said, ‚He apologized.‘
Prof. When Ergüder was reminded that many academics had not been admitted to Boğaziçi University before, he said: „It’s been 25 years since I left the university. I heard that professors were not accepted, but I don’t know what the situation is.“ The rector said he was sorry about this incident. „It was a good thing for him to call me.“

Prof. DR. Who is Üstün Ergüder? Üstün Ergüder completed his high school education at Robert College and his undergraduate studies at the Department of Political Science of Manchester University, England. Ergüder, who received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Syracuse University, USA, worked as a faculty member at Boğaziçi University between 1969 and 2000. At the same university, he was the head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations from 1988 to 1992 and rector from 1992 to 2000. Since 2000, he has been working as a faculty member at Sabancı University and as the director of the Istanbul Policy Center of the university. Ergüder, who also taught as a „visiting professor“ at the State University of New York and Syracuse universities in the USA, was also a „visiting researcher“ at the University of Michigan. Ergüder has published two books and scientific articles abroad. |
