Mehmet Begit, the mayor of the DEM Party in the Birecik district of Şanlıurfa, stated at a press conference: „After the election, pressure began to build regarding external administration. He announced his resignation from his party, saying: „I am ready to govern our district together with the people in Birecik.“
At a press conference, Begit publicly announced his resignation. Begit explained that he resigned after the elections because the municipality tried to be governed from the outside, and said:
„I would like to sincerely thank you for the support you gave me in the mayoral elections on March 31, 2024. This election had the highest number of votes in the history of mayoral elections. Our people believed in us and trusted us. With this belief, we started our mission. First and foremost, it must be emphasized that the words I will say have absolutely nothing to do with the members of the DEM Party who trusted and voted for us, but it is not possible for us to accept the desired interventions to remove our flag, the Atatürk poster, and the presidential poster of a group, especially in the post-election period. Furthermore, pressure on external management began to emerge after the election. I am ready to govern our district together with the people in Birecik. Only the residents of Birecik govern the Birecik district. I am determined in this matter. No will is above the will of the people. For these reasons, I am resigning from the DEM Party along with my four council members. Together with my council colleagues, we will continue my mission as the mayor of Birecik independently. „We are here for the people of Birecik.“
