The Editor-in-Chief of Hürriyet, Ahmet Hakan, stated in his article today regarding the ban on the Kurdish theater play „Qral û Travîs“ in Şişli: „Kurdish theater cannot be prohibited.“ Hakan noted in his article the following: „In Şişli, a Kurdish theater play called ‚Qral û Travîs‘ is being performed. The district governor of Şişli has banned the staging of this play. The news is spreading everywhere that ‚Kurdish games are banned.‘ In Turkey, the state has a Kurdish television channel. In a country like this, such a ban is completely nonsensical. ‚Revoking this ban would mean putting an end to an absurdity.'“

Kurdish Theater Play at the International Theater Festival
Although Kurdish is an officially recognized language in Turkey, the bans that are sometimes imposed on cultural events can lead to controversies. The ban on the Kurdish theater play planned in Şişli has come into the spotlight. As emphasized by Ahmet Hakan, the ban on Kurdish theater plays can be seen as a contradictory situation, despite the existence of Kurdish-language television channels in Turkey.
Incorporating Kurdish plays into international theater festivals in various provinces of Turkey could be an indicator of cultural diversity and artistic richness. The coexistence of different languages and cultures in cultural events can be an important step towards social peace and tolerance.
